0day folks, please make a note if you can, to send such cpufeatures.h
header sync warnings to acme as he's verifying the feature bits modified
before synching.

Better yet, you can even ignore those altogether but I'm sure acme has a
preference here.

Thx.

Borislav,

	This is an attempt, suggested by PeterZ for us to try to
automate those updates, so what I was expecting wasn't a report that
something changed, as I notice it myself, but an attempt at checking if
the changes in these updates would entail changes in the tools build.

	Say, is there a script in tools/perf/trace/beauty/ that ends up
producing a different .c that then gets compiled/linked with tooling? Or
this is just a trivial change like happens from time to time, a typo
fix, some comments added, etc.

	Some examples of what those scripts do:

⬢[acme@toolbox perf]$ tools/perf/trace/beauty/fadvise.sh
static const char *fadvise_advices[] = {
	[0] = "NORMAL",
	[1] = "RANDOM",
	[2] = "SEQUENTIAL",
	[3] = "WILLNEED",
	[4] = "DONTNEED",
	[5] = "NOREUSE",
};
⬢[acme@toolbox perf]$ tools/perf/trace/beauty/socket.sh
static const char *socket_families[] = {
	[0] = "UNSPEC",
	[1] = "LOCAL",
	[2] = "INET",
	[3] = "AX25",
	[4] = "IPX",

⬢[acme@toolbox perf]$

	Some of those files are used for building the tools, so that a
tarball generated from:

⬢[acme@toolbox perf]$ make help | grep perf
  perf-tar-src-pkg    - Build perf-5.13.0-rc4.tar source tarball
  perf-targz-src-pkg  - Build perf-5.13.0-rc4.tar.gz source tarball
  perf-tarbz2-src-pkg - Build perf-5.13.0-rc4.tar.bz2 source tarball
  perf-tarxz-src-pkg  - Build perf-5.13.0-rc4.tar.xz source tarball
⬢[acme@toolbox perf]$

will build in older systems where things added to the updated copy of
the kernel headers isn't present, so trying to update the file and then
rebuild perf, only warning me if it doesn't build would give me an early
warning about things that are breaking and that I should look sooner
rather than later.

	Doing just the diff is not that useful :-)

⬢[acme(a)toolbox perf]$ tools/perf/trace/beauty/fadvise.sh
static const char *fadvise_advices[] = {
	[0] = "NORMAL",
	[1] = "RANDOM",
	[2] = "SEQUENTIAL",
	[3] = "WILLNEED",
	[4] = "DONTNEED",
	[5] = "NOREUSE",
};
⬢[acme(a)toolbox perf]$ tools/perf/trace/beauty/socket.sh
static const char *socket_families[] = {
	[0] = "UNSPEC",
	[1] = "LOCAL",
	[2] = "INET",
	[3] = "AX25",
	[4] = "IPX",
	[5] = "APPLETALK",
	[6] = "NETROM",
	[7] = "BRIDGE",
	[8] = "ATMPVC",
	[9] = "X25",
	[10] = "INET6",
	[11] = "ROSE",
	[12] = "DECnet",
	[13] = "NETBEUI",
	[14] = "SECURITY",
	[15] = "KEY",
	[16] = "NETLINK",
	[17] = "PACKET",
	[18] = "ASH",
	[19] = "ECONET",
	[20] = "ATMSVC",
	[21] = "RDS",
	[22] = "SNA",
	[23] = "IRDA",
	[24] = "PPPOX",
	[25] = "WANPIPE",
	[26] = "LLC",
	[27] = "IB",
	[28] = "MPLS",
	[29] = "CAN",
	[30] = "TIPC",
	[31] = "BLUETOOTH",
	[32] = "IUCV",
	[33] = "RXRPC",
	[34] = "ISDN",
	[35] = "PHONET",
	[36] = "IEEE802154",
	[37] = "CAIF",
	[38] = "ALG",
	[39] = "NFC",
	[40] = "VSOCK",
	[41] = "KCM",
	[42] = "QIPCRTR",
	[43] = "SMC",
	[44] = "XDP",
};
⬢[acme(a)toolbox perf]$

	Some of those files are used for building the tools, so that a
tarball generated from:

⬢[acme(a)toolbox perf]$ make help | grep perf
  perf-tar-src-pkg    - Build perf-5.13.0-rc4.tar source tarball
  perf-targz-src-pkg  - Build perf-5.13.0-rc4.tar.gz source tarball
  perf-tarbz2-src-pkg - Build perf-5.13.0-rc4.tar.bz2 source tarball
  perf-tarxz-src-pkg  - Build perf-5.13.0-rc4.tar.xz source tarball
⬢[acme(a)toolbox perf]$

will build in older systems where things added to the updated copy of
the kernel headers isn't present, so trying to update the file and then
rebuild perf, only warning me if it doesn't build would give me an early
warning about things that are breaking and that I should look sooner
rather than later.

	Doing just the diff is not that useful :-)

Lemme see if I understand this correctly: you'd like for the 0day folks
to take those perf-*src-pkg builds, put them on an *old* distro and see
if it builds. Am I close?

And do that with the headers in tools/ which do not have the new changes
and see if they still build?

Or?

Alternatively, we can always go back to keeping the headers in sync with
those in tools/ and f'get about it.

Thoughts?

Thx.

Apply the patch, try to build it, it doesn't matter where you build it,
only that after applying the patch I want to know if it doersn't build,
so that I can look at it earlier than when it gets to my attention by
merging upstream, etc.

We're doing it already, Peter wants to help me with it, and I think this
has value.

I believe if you give the 0day guys a step-by-step what to do, they'll
probably add it to the lineup. :)

Or, if we start doing that then they don't have to do anything.

Who? Previously its me doing this work, i.e. keeping things in synch.
Actually it is expected that people doing the kernel work don't touch
tools/ wrt adding the copy, there is value in the warning, in looking at
what changed, to see if we should change tooling in some way beyond what
automation in merely making the copy can possibly do.

What has value is checking that the process of addressing the out of
sync warning doesn't break the build, to point to things that will need
human work to get it back to a buildable state.

Ok, I think I'm totally confused. First you say that you're trying to
keep the headers in sync and now you say that patches adding stuff to
the kernel cpufeatures.h header should not touch the copy in tools/...

In any case, I was thinking that we could document what people touching
cpufeatures.h need to do and put it Documentation/x86/cpuinfo.rst.

And then spread the load by asking everyone to do that test and fix the
perf build accordingly.

So that you don't have to do it all by yourself.
