* [PATCH][Fix][Resend] Fix Bug #4959: Page tables corrupted during resume on x86-64 (take 3)

Hi,

The following patch fixes Bug #4959.  For this purpose it creates temporary
page translation tables including the kernel mapping (reused) and the direct
mapping (created from scratch) and makes swsusp switch to these tables
right before the image is restored.

The code that generates the direct mapping is based on the code in
arch/x86_64/mm/init.c.

Looks much better than before, but is there any reason you cannot
share the code with the mm/init.c code?

Also Suresh S. has a patch out to turn the initial page tables
into initdata. It'll probably conflict with that. Needs to be coordinated
with him.

I think so.  I have to make the temporary page tables nosavedata or set
PG_nosave on them, so that swsusp doesn't overwrite them.  I'm not
sure if I could do this cleanly if I used the code from mm/init.c directly.

Unfortunately it interferes with the current swsusp code, which uses
init_level4_pgt anyway.

Could we please treat my patch as a (very much needed) urgent bugfix
and make the whole swsusp code in line with the Suresh's patch later on?

Suresh's patch is a urgent bug fix too. I suggest you two figure out how
to merge them.

Well, the code in mm/init.c is only executed really early, before zones
are initialized, and it uses alloc_low_page() to map memory.  Thus it seems
I only could make my code be executed next to init_memory_mapping(),
in which case I wouldn't be able to use page flags.  Apparently I'm missing
something but now I'm too tired to think efficiently.

I guess Andi meant "add a parameter to those mm/init.c functions".

(Otoh, you have reserved area, anyway, just set all of it PG_nosave,
and you'll not need to modify mm/init.c stuff).

My patch as such shouldn't change the behavior of the existing swsup
code. I am making only boot_level4_pgt as initdata. But not the 
init_level4_pgt.

Then it should not conflict with my patch either, because I'm only referring
to init_level4_pgt.

Ahh, ok.

This does not seem to be enough, however, because the original code
in mm/init.c is __init, so I can't call it during resume.  Moreover, it calls
some more __init functions, so to use it I'll have to move the allocation
of the resume temporary page tables to the kernel initialization code.

If I do this, I'll have to mark the allocated pages as nosave (see below)
and make sure they will always get the same physical addresses.  I am
going to see if I can do this, but I need some time.

Anyway this could be a long-term solution, but in the short term the bug
is there and needs fixing ASAP.  One good thing about the current
solution is that it does not break anything outside of swsusp _for_ _sure_.

Rather I've reserved a set of individual pages that are only linked
via the page tables structure.  IMO it's better to mark them as nosave
as soon as they get allocated or I'll need to browse the entire
structure to do this.  Also, I need to make them get always the
same physical addresses and tell the memory management
they are not free.

Suresh, unfortunately the kernel does not boot with your patch, because
it clears init_level4_pgt.  I think the patch that follows should be applied on
top of it.

If I am right, than your patch does not conflict with mine (just tested).

Did you try just only my patch on top of 2.6.14-rc2? You can get that
patch from http://www.x86-64.org/lists/discuss/msg07313.html

what is wrong with zapping low mappings? Looks like someother change
you are trying assumes that low mappings are always present in init_level4_pgt,

The patch that I tested is attached.  I think it's the same one.  I've just applied
it on top of 2.6.14-rc2-git7, and it doesn't boot.

Nope.

The problem (as I see it) is this:
In x86_64_start_kernel() you copy boot_level4_pgt[] into init_level4_pgt[],
and you make the latter your current PGD by loading cr3 with its address.
Fine.  With this PGD you call start_kernel() which calls setup_arch(), which
calls zap_low_mappings(0) that fills init_level4_pgt[] (which at this moment
is still your current PGD) with zeros ...

low address mappings are not zapped after boot as they are required later for 
cpu hotplug. These identity mapped low address mappings cause corruption 
when udev process is spawned early in boot. Since these low mappings 
are mapped global, cr3 writes (during context switches to udev process) 
will not flush these identity low mappings. These low mappings will be 
used by the kernel when it writes into the udev/hotplug user space, 
thereby corrupting kernel memory.

Andi Kleen also brought up another point. We should zap these low mappings, 
as soon as possible, so that we can catch kernel bugs more effectively.

This patch introduces boot_level4_pgt, which will always have low identity
addresses mapped. Druing boot, all the processors will use this as their
level4 pgt. On BP, we will switch to init_level4_pgt as soon as we enter
C code and  zap the low mappings as soon as we are done with the usage of 
identity low mapped addresses. On AP's we will zap the low mappings as 
soon as we jump to C code.

It works fine for me. Only thing I see though is a warning for UP configuration.
Other than that UP, SMP(with and without hotplug) kernels boot fine. I will
send the warning fix to Andrew.

Of course.  The .config is attached.  Generally, it's a non-SMP box, and commenting
out the zap_low_mappings((0) in setup_arch() makes the box boot again.

One more datapoint: The box boots if I move the zap_low_mappings((0)
in the following way:

Rafael, I still can't reproduce the issue. All of my EM64T systems are SMP
and looks like this problem happens only on an UP system. Looks like
there is some code flow which is still assuming the presence of low mappings.

Andi, can you please see if you can reproduce this on one of your systems
similar to Rafael's.

I looked at init_apic_mappings() and didn't give me any clue.
alloc_bootmem_pages() don't use low direct mappings.

Are you saying "noapic" is the second data point or you need to use "noapic"
along with moving zap_low_mappings(0)

OK, I'll try to narrow this a bit more.

It could be the second data point.  I always boot with "noapic", since otherwise
the sharing of IRQs is not handled properly on my box.

It shows that there's something wrong with get_smp_config(), but it shouldn't
have been called in the first place, as it was a non-SMP kernel.

The appended patch fixes the issue for me, but still if I run an SMP kernel on this
box, it crashes in get_smp_config().
